Thanks for the information. Now I know I'm not going mad or doing something

Given that I will be working with PHP/xdebug rather than Java for the time
being, do I lose
anything by dumping Apache Netbeans 12 and going back to Netbeans 8.2?

Apologies if this seems a dumb question. I am just a casual user and last used
Netbeans in
earnest back in 2017. Coming back to it, it seemed like a good time to
upgrade...

Thanks again.

Indeed, the help has been removed, JavaHelp is GPL licensed and cannot
be included in an Apache project.

Syntax highlighting for versions of PHP past something like 5.4, composer support (although that still needs work), git support (I think), support for frameworks such as Symfony, the current release of PHPUnit, probably a handful of other small things.

The IDE itself hasn't gone through radical changes, just lots and lots of incremental improvements to adapt to changing development environments. Maybe you could keep a copy of 8.2 around and use it to access the help system in hopes that it's significantly the same in 12.2.
