I'm trying out the synchronization changes in http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OPENJPA-250 to see if that helps my situation (quite a painful patch since a lot has changed since the patch on that issue was created). If it proves helpful I'll contribute a 1.2.1 compatible version of the patch.
