i have written a macro that does the job. it is in the attached file (tools - macros - organise macros - openoffice basic - replaceAccentedChars.odt - User - replaceAccentedChars - Main). you can transfer it to your 'my macros' folder and run either directly through the 'run macro' dialogue or by assigning a key accelerator.
