Md5sum is a program used to calculate a check sum on a file. If your downloading a file there is usually a txt file (usually of the same name as the file but with the .txt extension) at the download site with the alpha-number in it. When you download the file you want, run an md5sum.exe (for windows) program on the downloaded file and compare that alpha-number to the one on the download site. They should match, if not you didn't get a good download.

Do a google on 'md5sum' to find a program. There are several out there free for the downloading with instructions.
