I think I have to disagree. When you open the document that was
saved as a template and then the "Styles and Formatting" list
(formerly, "Stylist") the new and modified styles are all
available. What part of the picture am I missing? ==DT

Doug, not sure what you're saying here. I saved the file with the desired styles as a template. It showed up in the S&F list, yet the paragraph styles were not available for use in new documents, even when All Styles was displayed in S&F.

Even if this worked, IMO it would not be the right way to do it. I
do not want to proliferate templates because I add styles. I want
to be able to import new styles into one default template. I
believe that's the logical way to do it.

Unless perhaps I've missed your intent.

Paul

I store templates in a subdirectory outside the program's. Specifically, in Windows, I use c:\My Documents\OOoTemplates. In Linux, it's /home/doug/OOoTemplates. That way the templates remain intact as I move from one version to the next. It's only a one time change in Options > Paths for a new installation to be able to use all that earlier hard(!) work.

I do exactly the same thing.

Every time I want to create a new document, using File > New >
Templates and Documents, I "Open" the template I want to use and
all the styles I have set are available. If I want to add another
style, I can select "Edit", make the addition, the save the
template again. You could, of course, make any custom template
your new default by following the instructions in the Help file.

I find this method of managing templates and styles to be very
natural. It also gives me the ability to easily use different
templates for different requirements. Maybe you are leaving out a
step if your saved template isn't returning with the styles.

Doug

I see now that my problem stems from the document I'm working in predating the template I use as the default (it doesn't even show a template it's based on). Your method is fine, but it doesn't allow for changing things after the fact, such as incorporating Styles from a document not based on the default template.

This will lead to having to store several templates, or
recreating the styles manually in the one template. I dare say
this is not a smooth solution for most users, especially those
not of high technical acumen.

I think it's pretty basic - elements should be transportable
among templates.

Paul

Do you want to load some styles from your template into the document which is older than the template?
If so, F11 opens the Styles and Formating window. The icon on the right (New Style from Selection) allows to to load the styles of another file into your present document. In version 1.1.4, this is also possible using Format > Styles > Load. The bottom right has a button to browse for the file you want to get the styles from.

Dan

Actually I want to do the reverse, from an older doc to the default template, but this works in both directions and is just what is needed. Someone did do their thinking after all. Thanks much!

It had escaped me because I expected to see it in the Template Organizer and didn't think to try the down arrow on the New Style button. I even see it in the Help file now.

Thanks again,
Paul
