Subject: how do I open my file?
To: [email protected]

Hello there. I just downloaded Open Office and was really pleased with it
and did my whole resume in it. It automatically converted files I had on
the computer already to its format. (I dont know if I'm saying that right,
I'm not that computer literate) ANyhow, when I went today to access and
open and print the file, now it says that the program cannot open the file
as the file type is not supported. What happened? I created this file IN
the program that I'm trying to open it in! I need that resume today!
HELP!!!!

Thanks.

OOo didn't actually convert any formats of existing files, but what you describe here matches with having allowed it to be the default program for Microsoft Office files (the icon would change to show the OOo equivalent of Word, Excel, or PowerPoint). That's puzzling, because not being able to open a Writer file (stored by default in the ISO standard ODF filetype of .odt) is what I'd expect if Word was trying to open the file; it doesn't know the ODF filetypes. Can you give us some more information about exactly what you did during OOo installation, when creating the resume, and when trying to open it?
