Does OOo really automatically convert existing document files to its own
default format (i e, *.doc → *.odt) ? I've never noticed that ; have I
missed something important ?....

No, no conversions. What this user (and many others) interpret that way
is that the icons change from the MS Office ones to the OOo ones when
the file association is changed. In this case, the problem was that
although she made OOo the default application, when she saved her resume
file the extension was not added, and Windows didn't know the file
association. Not quite sure how that happened, since the option for
adding it automatically is (or was) the default. I really don't have any
idea why it's even an option! What purpose is served by not adding it?
