For some reason when I start OOo3 (any variation) it tells me that I can
recover an "Untitled1" Writer file. Whether I choose to try and recover
the file or not OOo crashes on me. Where are recoverable files stored? I
have tried uninstalling and reinstalling from both the Ubuntu repos (I
am running Kubuntu 8.10) and from the downloaded .deb files with the
same result.

I had problems when multiple variants of OO were using a common
.openoffice.org
to store setting and preferences. Did you try renaming the
.openoffice.org directory
to something else and restarting openoffice ? This will create a new
.openoffice.org
directory.

to begin with?
