I'd asked David to post this, but apparently he never got around to it, so I will. Anyway, the issue is resolved (see: <http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=99547> ). The issue was that he was running the unofficial Ubuntu PPA version of 3.0.1 vs the standard OOo 3.0.1. A reload of his PPA with installation of missing components apparently resolved the problem.
