I have been using OOo since version 1.0 and love it.

Recently, I have become involved in the sign making industry where I also use PhotoPrint6, to edit graphics and send them to our vinyl cutting or vinyl printing machines, and we also have Corel Draw, Photoshop, and Illustrator. In another voluntary capacity I have occasion to send newsletters, including graphics, to a commercial offset printing firm.

The outside printing firm prefers we send all artwork and proofs as PDFs.
We receive artwork from design studios in PDF format in our sign making business.

Apparently there are HI-RES PDFs and ordinary PDFs. What I want to know is that if I create a PDF in OOo, is it good enough to send straight to our sign-making software, or to our outside printing firm, or is it just ordinary (low res) PDF, good enough for private use but not the same as PDFs produced by Adobe Illustrator?

As you can see, I am a bit of a newbie to graphic design, sign making, and the printing industry, and I would really appreciate your help and advice. I would like to use OOo more in our business(es) if possible.

Many thank, James
