First of all, if you're curious about your version, just click the apple in the
upper left corner of the screen, and choose "About this Mac". About X11, if
the downloaded version doesn't work, you have to install X11 from your install
disk, which should have come with your mac. Just put the CD in your drive, and
in the finder window, scroll down (that's very important) until you see the
file "Optional Installs.mpkg". Double-click that and follow the instructions.

There is a file in the folder "Xcode tools" called X11SDK.pkg. Don't install
this file. It is an addon for developers. It won't do anything adverse to
your computer, but it won't run OpenOffice, either.

As a sidenote, there is a mac-native (meaning that you don't need X11 to run
it) version of OpenOffice.org called NeoOffice (www.neooffice.org). It works
well, but, in my experience, runs much slower than OpenOffice. Of course, if
you can't find your install disk, you might not be left with much of a choice.

Subject: [users] OpenOffice / X11 Problem

I just downloaded the latest OpenOffice (v. 2.0.4) onto my iBook (not
sure of the OS version - but it was purchased Nov. 2005, and I have kept
current with updates) but it required X11 to run. However, when I tried
to download X11 and install in on the HD the system refused, saying that
I had a newer version installed already.

I did download both packages with the Safari browser which (by reading
the web sit comments) may be causing this behavior?

I am relatively clueless on a Mac, having used PCs most of my life.

Thanks,
Bob Goodfliesh
