I have done sorting successfully in the past. One of the methods is to
highlight or select the lists (in Writer) by using ctrl +a. Then sort
becomes availbale and carry on.

What version of OpenOffice are you using? Which component - Calc,
Writer, ...? Which version of which Operating System?

You say you are using Writer. As far as I know the only thing Writer can
sort is a table. So you need to convert your data into a table and then,
when you select the rows or columns you want, the Sort menu will become
available.
