I then started a new piece, started it in my normal "First Chapter"
template. Somewhere in the middle of the thing, the space bar
stopped working, until I typed the next non-space character.
I was able to correct it by pasting the text into gedit, the Gnome
Text Editor, and thence back into the first chapter of a
previously-written piece.
Does anyone recognize this? Is there a simpler cure for it than
taking everything into simple text, then pasting it back again?
See this thread about that :

This thread has nothing at all to do with my problem.
I thought it was the same problem : "when a space is typed at the end
of a line, it does not show, although a “blind” space has been inserted"
Anyway, sorry to have tried to help. Won't do that again.
Bye
Hagar.
Doesn't seem to me like you should stop trying to help people because a
suggestion you made turned out not to be the answer to this person's
problem!
In some cases, the solution to a person's problem is obvious; in other
cases it isn't. This is a case where it isn't obvious. You made a
suggestion that you had reason to think may have been the answer to this
person's situation, but it turned out it wasn't. No harm in trying, and
I'm sure no one thinks badly of you for having tried.
