Is there a way to get the chosen symbol table to stay open, cutting out a lot of the extra repetitive steps?

You may wish to consider simply using a unique character or combination of
characters that you can find on your keyboard for each symbol that you require.
Then when you're done, just do a search-and-replace and substitute the
characters that you really want in your document.

Or create a macro for each special character and assign each macro to a different unused key. See the Help under Macros and under assigning keys to them.

Windows has it's own Character Insertion Table "widget" which one can dock wherever one wants. At least, XP does.

On Windows there are at least two quite civilised ways of customising one's keyboard to produce characters it wasn't born with. I'm sure there must be similar schemes on Macs ;-)

Also on Windows, in general, holding down the (magic) Alt key while entering a 4-digit number from the numeric key pad (*not* from the number keys above QWERTY) produces the Unicode character having that 4-digit decimal value. It's not hard to learn the few 4-digit sequences one usually needs. One could even print a small crib sheet. Does this scheme not work on Macs? Perhaps not with the Alt key but with some other?
