I understand the concern about sorting names, but that then becomes an issue of proper grammar and punctuation as well, J.R.R. Tolkien, V.E. Mitchell and L.E. Modesitt wouldn't even be remotely caught because their initials aren't anything we would be specifying as exceptions, and someone like A.A. Milne, T.H.E. Travers or T.H.E. Journal shouldn't be caught because the search string for the sort function should search for either "space/new line" "A" "space" or for "space/new line" "T" "H" "E" "space". A.A. Milne wouldn't be caught because there are two "A's" and no space and even a hypothetical A. Smith wouldn't be caught because the initial is "A" "." "space", initials should always be separated by periods, A Smith means something very different to a librarian than does A. Smith.
