Hello Scott, This issue was discussed at length on this list in the past and as far as I can remember it is not possible to cross reference a numbered item (yet). There is a a request for enhancement for this which is now marked as fixed, but I am not sure in which version it will be integrated. http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=25072 If you look at the comments, there seems to be a macro that allows you to solve the issue.
