OpenOffice can open older versions of Word documents, but not the latest
Word 2007, .DOCX format. She'll have to save in the older .DOC format.
Word Perfect should also be able to open .DOC files. Also, she'll have
to save in .DOC format the files she wants to take to school. Also,
it's best to work in the default .ODT format and then save to .DOC only
when she's ready to take the file to school. Another possibility is to
create a PDF file, if it's not intended to be modified by the recipient.
