That was a great help. Of course I had to actually create a new
paragraph style otherwise if I had edited the default style the whole
document would have been turned 90 degrees.
I do wonder though why that was not done automatically when the word
document was opened.

OK, Neil I think I can give you some help on that one:
Right click on the text, go to "Edit Paragraph Style" and you will see
a tab labelled "Position." In that you can select rotation to 90 or
270 degrees.
