Hi Glenn

In answer to your questions... in my humble experience :

I use OpenOffice on the same Windows based PC as Microsoft Office 2003
without any problems at all. I also use it on a machine at home with
Office 2007, again with no problems. I also use it on Linux with no
Microsoft products at all!

OpenOffice is NOTHING to do with Microsoft Office and not "interwoven"
in anyway. I've not noticed that either product gets in the way with
its counterpart.

As far as I am aware you can install OpenOffice to any valid drive under
Windows. Obviously the same caveats apply that do to all Windows based
applications. Can't see why you would want to though? OpenOffice is a
tidy installation, and not one that I've had problems installing and
uninstalling (unlike MS Office.)

I have used OpenOffice with a variety of security products installed,
including Norton, AVG, McAfee and so on. No problems specific to
OpenOffice in my experience - though I'd always check to make sure you
have the latest update for whatever version you are on, and check the
vendors website.

OpenOffice is a great alternative to MS Office, which I only still use
as its my work standard (at the moment). I like the idea of an "open"
approach to software, and not the Microsoft (and other Windows software)
approach. In all honesty, as soon as there is a way for me to ditch MS
Publisher and the legacy files in that format, and an all-in-one
replacement for Outlook, I'll be using exclusively OpenOffice.

Good luck, I hope you enjoy OpenOffice.

Regards

Phil

Subject: [users] Request for General Information

Hello,

I am considering download and installation of OpenOffice.org 2.3.1
(application). I would be considered a general user and not a code
writer. Would someone please answer these questions for me?

1) From what I can tell of the information on the OOo website this
application suite can co-exist with MS Office. That is, I would not have
to uninstall MS office at some point. Is this correct?
2) Is the suite somehow interwoven with MS Office that would influence
the performance of either one or make uninstalling of either one
difficult?
3) Can I install the application to a hard drive different from the
drive where MS Office and Windows XP is installed?
4) Are there any issues with Norton Internet security software or Norton
Utility suite with the application? What has been your experience so
far?

The Openoffice.org website contains a lot of information but I could not
find answers to these questions that I thought basic.

I look forward to your reply as it will help me to make a decision
whether to download the suite or not.

Thank you.

Best regards,
Glenn Phillips
