How does one convert these documents? One downloads the free ODF plugin from Sun Microsystems and installs it in MS Office 2007: <http://www.sun.com/software/star/odf_plugin/index.jsp>. With the plugin installed in MS Office, open the 2007 document and save it as ODF. Then open the ODF in OpenOffice. If the free trial of Office 2007 has expired you might be able to use an older version of MS Office with Microsoft's "compability pack" installed: < http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA100444731033.aspx>. This will let you open the 2007 document in e.g. Office 2003 and then save it in the older pre-2007 format which OpenOffice will be able to read. I believe that version 3 of OpenOffice, due in September, will be able to read MS office 2007 documents. Someone said the new 2.4 version (just released) would be able to do that but the release notes make no mention of it. None of these methods guarantees 100% compability of appearance, layout, etc. etc. I think Macros will also be an issue.
Or as a temporary (maybe permanent) option, you might consider the enhanced version of OOo called "Oxygen Office Professional". This is still OOo, but this edition includes a number of extras and enhancements, one of them being the ability to open MS Office 2007 ".docx, .xlsx" files. The conversion is not 100% perfect, but then neither is Microsoft's own Compatibility Pack for earlier versions of MS Office [1].
Oxygen Office Professional can be downloaded from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ooop It is a fairly large download (approx. twice the size of the "official" edition) and you will need to completely uninstall any current version of OOo before you install Oxygen Office Professional.
