Some of the .txt files are from Windows 2K and have been on openSUSE

adding .txt causes it even when the simple text file originated on
Linux (via Kate).
I suspect it is with the difference in end-of-line separators between
dos format and Linux format, but the program should be able to
identify which it is without even referencing the file type [that
function is built into Linux, and other programs have no problem
determining file type by just examining the contents].
And why does it revert to calc on a simple text program, even if it
can't figure out the difference between various end-of-line characters?

In checking the files that were screwed up by this update - it is the
native Linux file formatsthat OOo writer (for and running on Linux)
cannot handle. That is a MAJOR problem and makes this version
practically WORTHLESS!!!
Even the files written out by previous AND this version cannot be read
in by this version if the are a text only file.
Someone screwed this up big time!!!!

I corrected the problem by updating to version 2.4.1.4... which was
available through openSUSE's build service.
This did not come through as an update on the normal openSUSE update
sites, or from anything on the OOo web site, or anything mentioned on here.
