As often as you like [1]. It's just a DNS query, really cheap if there is no update. However... (a) Generally, there is just one update a day, if at all. Thus, checking hourly won't gain you much. (b) Updates tend to be more frequent after new SA releases, especially minor updates (from 3.1.x to 3.2.0), not that much for micro version updates (3.2.x).
