Check your logs. spamd likely logged the failure. And btw, spamc also logs in some cases, like refused connection attempts to spamd. You will find your previous attempts without spamd running being logged. Also, try something like this. echo | spamc -x; echo $? The first echo "simulates" a message. Poorly at that, but suitable for what we're debugging here.
