Thanks for the quick replies, Marius and RW.

I see; I saved the email message out of Thunderbird (with View ->
Headers ->  All), as a plain text file. Apparently, that process butchers
the original message.

In thunderbird, select the message and then press Ctrl-U (or from the menus: View > Message Source) and select File > Save to save the email including all headers in plain text format. You can then feed it to spamassassin as above.
