Don't run virus scanners on working copies. If you want to check for viruses in the repository, use a designated working copy and trigger a scan of changed files from the post-commit hook.
The virus scanner excludes this particular directory on my box, which also suffers the slow-down.
When we do the checkout via tortoise, tortoise sits at 100% CPU load, and I don't see anything else fighting it for time.
