That way you still force millions of users to behave differently now
because one user made a mistake once. I don't see the point in why
revert should break backwards compatibility instead of providing
opt-in, that could only be argued if creating backups is providing
benefit to most users, which two of us are already doubting. Looking
at git checkout, I don't see the requested behavior as well.

I'll keep my vote for opt-in.
