Woot! I finally have a working example! I have updated the D3 Example <http://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Extension/D3+Example> with the the changes I have made to make the example work.
Basicly I wrapped the whole existing script in a function which reacts on the "d3:loaded" event, and I added the "on demand" use of the d3js extension (instead of using the "online d3js").
