Madan was quoted in USMA 24291 as writing:
> What is the width of the gauge (ie) width between 2
rails.
Normally it is 1.44 m for the standard gauge.
http://parovoz.com/spravka/gauges-e.htm gives the following
information about railroad gauge widths:
Metre gauge 3' 3-3/8" or 1000 mm
Standard gauge (world-wide) 4' 8-1/2" 1432 to 1435 mm
Russian gauge 5' 1520 to 1524 mm
Indian broad gauge 5' 6" 1676 mm
And may I add
Toronto streetcar and subway 4' 10-7/8" 1495 mm
The Toronto gauge was chosen to prevent the railways from running
trains down the main streets, as the New York Central did in several
New York State towns.
