Yes, in Atlanta and I know in Florida too (because my deceased sister and her husband used to participate in them) the terms 5K and 10K for races are used regularly. I am fairly certain those terms for runs or races are used throughout the U.S.

The downside though is that it still seems that most reporting by media and runners themselves speak in terms of 3.1 or 6.2 miles. I still fear that many, if not most people, barely know that the K means kilometer.

How is it in the state of Alaska? Do you think there is more advanced knowledge of kilometers?

We have both here. The 5K races seem to be somewhat more common than the 10K ones. -- Jason
