Why?  Because you need to make two calculations with L/100 km rather than one 
calculation km/L in actual use.

  CNN recently had an article urging people to "think backwards" about fuel 
economy. If we are going to go to the trouble of changing people's thinking, 
why not just change it to L/ 100 km and be done with it?
