That article is ridiculous. YES, the family moving to a station wagon
*saved* more total fuel than the couple moving to a hybrid, but the
family is still burning 300 more gallons per year than the couple. So
while I'm absolutely in favor of getting rid of wasteful SUVs, it's not
just about how much fuel you save, but how much you still *use*.
This is like saying, "Look, I'm still being extremely wasteful, but only
HALF as wasteful as I used to be! Applaud me and my efforts, I'm saving
the planet!"
25 mpg is nothing to write home about, our CAFE standards have been over
25 mpg since 1981! We all took a gigantic step backward with the rise
of the SUV culture, and only now, with oil prices shooting through the
roof, are we starting to get away from that.
