I doubt either is "true root" access. Let's see, I'll try editing the nvram on the motherboard, rewriting the flash bios, installing a new bootloader in the mbr and rebooting.

So the question is what do you need and what don't you? I suspect for most that hw access is not required. Having emulated users/groups, your own IP, and virtual root access will suffice.
