Here's a link on SourceForge that has lots of info on UML: http://user-mode-linux.sourceforge.net/ I actually have a hosting account with a company in Ogden (http://www.webpipe.net/) that uses FreeVSD (http://www.freevsd.org/) to run Linux Virtual Dedicated Servers. It seems that the two work rather differently from reading about each though.. I guess the main difference is that with UML, you have "true" root access.. Not the case with a virtual machine.. Just some thoughts..
