[uug] usb 1.0 vs. 1.1 vs 2.0

The title just about says it all.  What's the difference between the 
different versions of USB?  How do I tell which version my computer 
supports?  Can 2.0 devices detect a 1.1 connection and scale back? 
(Note:  not the same question as using a 1.1 device on a 2.0 connection.)
