The main difference between the two is speed. USB 1.1 can handle
12Mbit/s while USB 2.0 runs up to 480Mbit/s; that's a huge difference. I
use a program called usbview to manage (at least get info about) the USB
devices on my computers; that will tell you what type it is. You should
be able to apt-get it. 

USB 2.0 devices should be able to work just fine on a 1.1 controller.
