I don't think the church has too much of a problem with overgrown beards. If you'd like examples, look at most of the early presidents of the church (after Joseph Smith). Granted, they don't like us youngsters growing those big beards, but I think we'll be allowed to grow them once we're older.

Hmm, except that (at least for now) if you get called to a bishopric your Stake President will probably ask you to shave; if you get called to a Stake Presidency your Area Authority will very, very likely ask you to shave; and if you get called to a GA position you will certainly be required to shave. Especially if you ever get to speak at General Conference.
I don't like it either, I'd love to never shave again, but if the Lord calls...
