I can at least shed some light on this problem.  In my experience, 
people who learned to program east of the Mississippi say "char" like 
in "charcoal", while those of us who learned programming out west say 
"care" as in "character".  There also appears to be a small minority of 
weirdos who say "car". :-)

And before you start composing an e-mail saying "hey, I learned to 
program while living in [insert western state here] and I say 'char'" 
or vice versa, just take another breath, hit the delete key, and move 
on.

Also, if someone has already brought this up, I'm about 75 messages 
behind on the list e-mail today.  Talk about your high volume... it 
even beats out the postfix list!
