I'm still confused, what value does gold have? Aside from the ablilty to exchange gold for some bits in my bank's database why would I ever want to trade my barrel of wheat for your pound of metal?

Well, my metal is more shiny than your wheat, and with a little alchemy, you might even be able to change it into lead (a highly useful substance).
