The funny thing is, gold and diamonds do have some practical uses today that make them valuable (albeit probably not to the extent that we value them). Historically, it was mostyle the "shiny doodad" quality, combined with relative scarcity (and sometimes artificially created scarcity) that led people to decide they were valuable.
