Okay, I had the same problem.  I fixed it by firing up xawtv, getting
my channel there, and then closing that and starting MPlayer.
Apparently, the card needs to be initialized to some state in order to
function properly with the television input.  There is probably a way
to do this entirely from MPlayer, but for now, this is one
workaround.
