I'm in the process of building such a box and so far I've been impressed
with MythTV. Mostly I'll be using mine for MythMusic, the mp3 jukebox.

One thing that I found a little confusing was the hardware requirements.
Obviously you need tv out and tv input cards for it to work. Unless your
card can do mpeg encoding and/or decoding you'll need a pretty beefy
processor. I think if I were to build a tv unit I'd go for one of the
Hauppage PVR cards that they support.

But just for music, it's working great on a pentium 133.
