I'm going to put in another plug for OSX.  I've never used it, but the
people I know who have used it say that you can plug any Mac hardware into
it and it "just works."  No slapping a CD in or wizards popping up or
anything.  Does anyone have experience to confirm or contradict this?

Granted this also means you're limited to Mac hardware.
