As soon as I fired off the email to the list, I found the solution on Google:

I just had to look for the problem on any laptop, not my specific laptop.
        The problem is that the hardware detection stuff can't see the keyboard 
unless it is generating events. I just had to tap the spacebar during the 
hardware detection/kernel load stage of the install and everything works fine 
now. I hear that once you have installed, it will detect it on bootup fine.
