More likely it's because the "Use name and password" box is checked on
the "Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings" page of "Account Settings." It's
not your fault, Mozilla does that by default. It can be useful though,
if you use a laptop then authenticating should allow you to send mail
when you're not on their network.
