Another important thing to consider is that using WEP on some APs reduces the throughput by over 50%. (It does on mine, anyway).

That's throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Yes, it's broken, yes,
realize that and use something strong wherever possible, but don't leave your
car unlocked just because slim jims exist (and most car locks are pitifully
easy to pick).
