My C-Media 8738 chip welded into my ASUS mainboard supports 5.1 sound, and the
reenigne esrever who hacked together a driver for Linux seems to have it gotten
working, IIRRCC. (Oh, no. It can't be! I've finally acquired those icky, occult IRC
acronyms!)

As for speakers:

1. good flat, neutral response from 20 Hz to 20,000 KHz over a respectable range of
potential difference, but WYHIWYG - not!, speakers that can speak beyond the limits of
human audition produce more naturally defined audible sound because of that fact.
2. > 75 Db signal to noise ratio. IMO.
3. at least 75 W total power, but IANAL.
4. there are several factors affecting fidelity, like, I conjecture the strenght of
the magnetic field in which each speaker's voice coil resides, the quality of the
cabling and speaker conductors, the quality of the amplifier, the room ambience, etc.,
but YDHTTMWFI.
5. the subwoofer must have it's own amp, but especially for computer speakers this is
where the amp resides anyway. BYOB (Bring Your Own Bass).

Altec Lansing seems to be the best brand of affordable speakers FWIHS. I don't know
really any much more than this. LOL.
