Not sure what you mean by automated e-mails.  If you mean
auto-responders, there are programs that work with your .forward or
.procmail mechanisms (under sendmail or postfix) that can auto-reply.

As for automatic e-mails, there are a variety of little scripts out
there for sending out e-mails from a script (say a cron script).
