Is it possible you're confusing atheists with agnostics? As has been
stated, an agnostic is by definition a doubter. A true agnostic simply
doesn't know whether there is a god or not (or where that god may be
found). It would be incorrect to suggest that agnostics _believe_
anything.

An agnostic would have to deal both with the worry that there is a god
and the agnostic may be living in violation of that god's rules *and*
with the possibility that there is no god and that there is no point for
the agnostic's existence. Agnostics tend to be terrified of death,
because they fear they will cease to be.

An atheist, on the other hand, believes there is no god -- in a way,
it's like a faith. It is the atheist who takes comfort in having no
accountability to a supreme being -- because they profess a sure belief
that there is none.

On the contrary, agnostics are agnostic _because_ it's the easiest
explanation for them to accept. They find it remarkably fun to
entertain the idea that they have no accountability to a supreme
being. Why else would they believe it? If they say that they're some
kind of martyr for "accepting the cold hard truth" it's a load of
bull.
