I've never heard CS 142 described as requiring "a
lot of work". I never even went to the lectures, and I generally whipped
out the labs in under 15 minutes each. My pre-university programming
experience consisted of some moderately advanced QuickBasic.

Of course, that was when it was taught using Object
Pascal, so what do I know. :)

I agree. CS 142 has definitely been one of the
easiest classes I have taken at BYU. It was in Java
when I took it, and no, I didn't take it one of the
semesters that the TA's wrote the projects for the
students, I did them all on my own.

I, like Steve, took it back in the Pascal days. I tested out of it early on, since I already knew Pascal.

HOWEVER. Pascal or Java, it won't be an easy class for everyone. My brother-in-law, who is a very intelligent, very quick guy, struggled big-time with that class. He had never programmed before, which made the class especially difficult for him. He was over at my house all the time, since the TA's were of little help to him, and I can tell you that for someone who is not confident in his programming skills, that class is a *boat-load* of work. True, if it were me, I could have breezed through the assignments, but I've got a decade-and-a-half of programming experience behind me. For my brother-in-law, each line of code was a tortuous, time-consuming experience.

Just want to point out that just because it was easy for you (and me), it doesn't mean that no one will struggle with it.
