I've added my non-root user to the audio group (several tutorials had
this), but it still won't work (as non-root or root).

I su to root before I run alsaconf, and it still fails. So it's not
that the playing of the file doesn't work - that's just a symptom. I
can't get any sound to work.

Thanks for the suggestion though.
